I did some googling, and if anyone else was curious: IMBD is owned by Amazon, Rotten Tomatoes is owned by Fandango (Made up of NBC Universal and Warner Bros).👀
even if we think about the literary landscape, Goodreads, the largest book reviewing platform, is owned by Amazon. left it years ago because it’s not only not aligned with my ethos, but you can literally see what is being pushed and what is not—this is so much bigger than just letterboxd or the film industry!!
Yes, Ashley!!! Letterboxd is genuinely unique and it has built its community by being independent. And even for those who aren’t necessarily Letterboxd users—this is about proving there is a viable alternative to massive tech companies, media conglomerates, and just accepting the way things are. We don’t need to accept it. We need to build the future we want to see. 💖
